The weight loss aid pill Alli, (the brand name of Orlistat) is now on sale in the UK from pharmacies. It’s launch this week has provoked fierce debate in the media. Orlistat has previously been available by prescription only on the NHS for the past 10 years, so it has been around for quite a while.

The pill is for people over the age of 18 who have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 28 or more and when taken with a healthy diet resulted in people losing up to 50% more weight than dieting alone according to makes GlaxoSmithKline. Alli works by effectively blocking the body’s ability to absorb fat.
